The Pillars of Hercules, one of Gibraltar’s marvels, are two rock promontories standing on each side of the gateway to the Strait of Gibraltar.
Legend has it that Hercules separated two mountains to create the Strait and thus formed these pillars. According to ancient Greek mythology, Hercules was a hero who gained strength from the gods, making him capable of such a feat.
These pillars have a compelling history, attributed to their significant symbolism and cultural worth as an ancient world monument.
They have been referred to as the gateway between the Mediterranean Sea and Atlantic Ocean and acted as a pivotal point of passage in maritime trade, with exploration spanning across different eras.
Throughout history, seafarers have relied on the Pillars as a crucial landmark to navigate through the dangerous Strait of Gibraltar.
Even today, the massive natural structures known as the Pillars of Hercules serve as an essential guidepost and draw countless visitors who come to admire their incredible beauty and rich historical significance.
