Have you ever been doing a long drive in England and wished you could break up the hours behind the wheel with a stay at a lovely luxury hotel somewhere along the road? The Plough Inn at Lupton in Cumbria provides a wonderful oasis on the A65 for travellers.
Ideally located a few miles from junction 36 M6, just south of the Lake District and near to Kirkby Lonsdale and The Yorkshire Dales, you can just as easily use The Plough as a place for exploring the local area.
I was invited to review a night at The Plough Inn and it couldn’t have come at a better time. I had been away for a few weeks and hadn’t seen much of Tom, so a mini break near the Lakes was the perfect opportunity to spend some time with my fiancé.
My review of The Plough Inn at Lupton
I have to admit that while we were looking forward to our night away, we didn’t expect to find such a beautifully styled B&B on the A65. We arrived on a sunny Saturday afternoon and were led to The Torsin Suite. When that door swung open, we quickly made the decision not to bother exploring. Instead, we cracked open a bottle of wine in the beautiful suite.
Immediately I was struck by the sheer size of the room. It’s so spacious, at 685 sq ft! The sash windows had been thrown open when we arrived so it was wonderfully airy, which was very welcome in the July heat.
There’s a dressing area with a huge wardrobe and dressing table as you walk into the room, then it opens up onto a sitting area.
The crushed velvet teal L-shaped couch is the focal point, and the colour scheme throughout the room is all aquamarine greens and greys. I don’t think I’ve ever stayed in a room with such a stylish and comfortable sitting area.
It’s all about the little touches for me when I stay in a hotel, so imagine my delight when I flipped through the coffee table books: The Lonely Planet Ultimate Travelist, Gin: The Manual and one on plants. What more could a cliche millennial traveller want?!
The Torsin Suite has a working record player and a small selection of records. I’ve never stayed in a hotel with this feature before, and the quirky character it adds to the suite delighted me to no end. In fact, the lounge corner of the room felt more like a very chic friend’s living room than a hotel room!
There’s a round glass table with an eye-catching horse head shaped stand, and a big TV, coffee machine and heater for the colder months.
The bed is huge, with luxury linen. The Torsin Suite is The Plough Inn’s bridal suite and can actually sleep five people so with just two of us, we could really spread out.
There are fluffy towels and robes in the bathroom, which is also vast and very grand. The roll-top bathtub is the main feature (and was the perfect place to relax after dinner). There are premium toiletries and the large walk-in shower has a waterfall head.
The building was built around 1760 and while it has been renovated, they’ve kept the rustic wooden ceiling beams throughout. The traditional country inn style of the building is elevated with tasteful touches of modern opulence, as reflected in the huge art deco mirror hanging over his n’ her sinks. It gave us plenty interior inspiration for our future forever home!
Review of dinner at The Plough Inn
Downstairs at The Plough, the sprawling rooms are signposted with old-fashioned signposts that are typical of the local area. There’s a large bar with a big beer garden with loads of tables and even some beanbags, which we were pleased about since the sun was shining during our stay. The drinks prices are reasonable, too!
We sat down in the restaurant knowing exactly what we wanted to start our meal with. Having just got back from France, I wanted ALL the cheese and we’d been looking forward to the camembert sharer all week. Thankfully, all of the food came out quickly. Studded with garlic and rosemary, the baked camembert did not disappoint.
For mains, I was torn between the beef pie and the fish pie so I asked our waiter which he preferred. He told me that people rave about the oxtail and mushroom pie, so I opted for that.
It was delicious, with golden pastry, tender meat and flavoursome mushrooms in a rich gravy. I’d go back for it!
Tom went for the ribeye steak. It comes with portobello mushroom, roast tomato, onion rings, beef dripping chips and your choice of sauce. He thoroughly enjoyed it.
There wasn’t really room for dessert but we ordered some anyway: lemon tart for me and ‘thunder and lightning’ ice-cream for him. It’s fair to say we practically rolled up the stairs to bed!
Breakfast the next morning was similarly delicious. The waitress had a bright, friendly manner despite the early hour (The Plough Inn stops serving breakfast at 9.30, which was a bit early for us). She brought us tea and we picked from the small continental buffet (fruit, yoghurt, but I didn’t see any pastries).
Hotel guests order from a nicely varied menu for breakfast. The full fry-up sounded delicious but we just couldn’t face it that early, so Tom went for a bacon bap and I had ‘eggy bread’ (I know this is controversial, but can we just call it French toast like adults?) with warm syrup and bacon. Yum!
My only criticism of the whole experience was that the staff (with the exception of the lady at breakfast) could have been slightly more on the ball with welcoming guests as that can make all the difference, but it’s more of an observation than a complaint and didn’t really bother us.
We were pleasantly surprised by our stay at The Plough Inn and I’d highly recommend it to anyone looking for a place to spend the night to break up a long drive, or for those planning a romantic break near the Lake District or Yorkshire Dales. The Torsin Suite especially was very impressive and I felt very lucky to be sleeping there.

This looks so lovely, I really fancy it as I’m looking for a one night getaway for pure eating and relaxation where we don’t leave the hotel! Every detail looks well thought out and luxurious. Such a fab review. Melis x
