Morpeth is a traditional market town in Northumberland that benefits from many of the perks of a big city. While the destination has retained its small town charm and is still a centre of commerce, its high street boasts a number of international brands among the various local stores. There are plenty of great shops in Morpeth.
I was invited to spend a day shopping in Morpeth by More In Morpeth and discovered the town is a go-to for antiques, interior decor and gifts with a Northumberland flavour.
If you’re going shopping in Morpeth, I recommend grabbing lunch at Harry’s and having a coffee and cake break at the very Instagram-friendly Made Of Crumbs.
If you’re making a weekend of it, get dinner and drinks at Pleased To Meet You and stay at The Auction House. You can check all Morpeth accommodation availability and prices here.
Here’s my pick of the best shops in Morpeth.
Where to shop in Morpeth
1. Rutherford & Co
10 – 16 Bridge Street, Morpeth
Morpeth has its very own department store! In addition to big brands like Clinique, Benefit and L’Occitane, Rutherford & Co sells smaller up and coming brands too. Their homeware section is particularly good.
2. The Gift Pod
28 Newgate Street Old Nags Head Yard, Morpeth
This is the best place to shop in Morpeth if you’re looking for a unique gift. The Gift Pod stocks lots of local independent brands like Pride of Northumberland preserves and Best Kept Secrets soaps. There’s a great selection of gifts for babies – I especially loved the personalised bibs and flannels.
3. Kelly Robson Interiors
28 Bridge Street, Morpeth
Morpeth really does have a lot of options for anyone wanting to transform their house! You can browse home accessories, jewellery and more at Kelly Robson Interiors.
4. Morpeth Gin
Sanderson Arcade, Morpeth
What better souvenir from Morpeth than a bottle of local gin? Each bottle is inscribed with the words ‘“Inter Silvas et Flumina Habitans”, which is the town motto in latin. It means ‘“Amongst Trees and Streams we Dwell”. The gin’s botanicals are local Gooseberry, Rosemary & Grapefruit. I’ve yet to try it, but it’s on my list!
5. Sandersons
Sanderson Arcade, Morpeth
Sandersons wouldn’t be out of place in a buzzing city like York or Newcastle. The department store sits at the carpark entrance side of the arcade and stocks big brands like Barbour, Valentine, Holland Cooper and UGG.
6. Renaissance
14 Sanderson Arcade, Morpeth
Another must-visit for luxury brands in Morpeth, Renaissance is the best place to shop for designer brands like Dior, L. K. Bennett and Mulberry. There is also a store in Alnwick.
7. The Chocolate Gallery
7 Oldgate, Morpeth
Handcrafted artisan chocolates and confectionary abound at The Chocolate Gallery. They even sell a vegan range.
8. Lateral Art
1 Chantry Place, Morpeth
Northumberland has its fair share of artists, and Lateral Art is one of the places they go to stock up on supplies. The Morpeth shops sells watercolour and acrylic paints, high quality paper for drawing, painting and calligraphy and other creative essentials.
9. Brooks of Oldgate
16 Oldgate, Morpeth
This is a family-run shop selling hand-painted and upcycled furniture and homeware made by local suppliers.
10. Marlow
29 Bridge Street, Morpeth
Ladies, this one’s for you. Marlow is another independent boutique in Morpeth. They have a sister store in Whitley Bay.
11. Matt Robson Artwork
8 Newgate Street
Looking for a unique gift or some wildlife art for your home? This is Matt Robson’s second gallery, which also sells homeware. The first location is in Alnwick.
12. Stripes of Morpeth
46 Newgate Street, Morpeth
This pocket-sized boutique in Morpeth sells luxury accessories so I recommend making a beeline for it if you’re shopping for a gift for a lady who likes the finer things in life. I lingered for a long time in front of the candles and diffusers!
13. The Bee and Botanist
Unit 5 & 6, Packhorse Yard, Newgate Street, Morpeth
Hidden down a little alley off Newgate Street, this is the place to pick up some blooms while you’re in Morpeth. The small florist is almost as eye-catching outside as it is inside!
14. Eco Morpeth
37a Newgate Street, Morpeth
Every town needs a shop like Eco Morpeth. If you’re trying to live a more sustainable lifestyle, pop in with your reusable containers and stock up on kitchen, bathroom and even cleaning essentials. Eco Morpeth also has a hot drinks counter, where you can sample a blue ‘Mermaid’ latte, with a fridge full of vegan friendly cakes.
15. Perriss Antiques
Unit 4 Pack Horse Buildings, 17, Newgate Street, Morpeth
If you love pottering around antique shops, you won’t be disappointed in Morpeth. The best one I visited was Perriss Antiques, which is a veritable treasure trove of curious bits and bobs. I felt like I could circle the room for an hour and still not take everything in!
16. Tallantyre
43-45 Newgate Street, Morpeth
I just had to include Tallantyre in this list. The gallery has five exhibition rooms packed with incredible pieces that made me want to fill my house with beautiful art. It’s a family business and they also sell interior decor such as wallpaper, soft furnishings etc.
