I’ve slept in a lot of different beds in my time, and I notice the difference between a good mattress and a bad one. Allow me to list a few of the more memorable of the bunch, a la Jacqueline Wilson’s Bed and Breakfast Star. (Shout out to the cool kids who remember her. We’ve come a long way, eh?)
I suppose my first flirtation with what become a ferocious addiction to bed-hopping (lol) began at university, where I slept off hangovers on student flat mattresses that creaked and prodded me with every tentative movement, their springs weakened from withstanding the exploits of countless students before me. Then, when I was 21, I spent three months backpacking and hopped to a new bed in a new neck of the woods every other night. There were bunk beds in New Zealand and Australia, Thailand, Vietnam and in an attic in Cambodia, and each one of them had cradled thousands of backpackers’ wary limbs before mine fell into them.
I’ve slept in fancy hotel beds with pillow carefully chosen from actual pillow menus, on airport floors and once, as a teenager, in a supermarket car park. Don’t ask why – I had a lovely warm bedroom at home but for some reason felt that camping out on a cement floor would be the ultimate adventure with my pals. I suppose it signalled my yearning for new experiences, ones I couldn’t really pursue when I was 14 and my only income was from my saturday job in a nursing home. Thank god we grow up…
Ah, youth. It was all good fun at the time, but now that I’m a functioning adult with a proper routine, the bed I’m sleeping in has begun to affect my waking hours. It’s one of those things you might not notice is hurting you until you upgrade, but a good mattress really does improve your overall quality of life.
I’ll always remember heaving myself onto the bare mattress of the first room I ever rented in Dubai, and practically being battered. It was like sleeping on a marble table top, and I was perpetually exhausted while I lived there.
Now that I’m settled with my fiancé in England, I’ve been slowly making our house a home. I started in the living room, with an interior decor overhaul. Then, when Leesa Sleep got in touch and asked me to review one of their mattresses, I saw it as a sign that it was time to turn our bedroom into a nighttime sanctuary. I used it as an opportunity to buy some slightly more expensive pillows, new sheets and I even looked up ‘pillow arrangements’ on Pinterest so I could turn our pillow situation into something Tom can’t get his head around at all. Men.
When our Leesa Mattress arrived, I couldn’t believe that a mattress could fit in the comparatively small box, but Tom ripped it open, let it expand for a few hours and there it was: our new toy! We actually liked the mattress we had before so it’s now in the spare room for when my mum comes to visit, and we’ve been looking forward to collapsing into our Leesa Mattress every night since.
It’s, excuse the pun, a dream to sleep on, and is both firm and supportive but also soft and comforting. I looked up the technology behind its supreme comfort and learned that Leesa Mattresses are engineered with three premium foams for cooling, body contouring and pressure-relieving core support. So it’s firm, but not too firm. That’s why it feels like all of your pressure points are equally supported. Interestingly, the neck and shoulder tension I used to suffer from thanks to hunching over a laptop all day has massively eased off since we got our Leesa Mattress.
If you are looking to upgrade your mattress, I can’t recommend Leesa enough. It’s undeniably the comfiest mattress I’ve ever slept on (and I’ve been fortunate enough to stay at some very luxurious hotels because of this blog), and they have ten year warranties, plus free delivery and returns. You won’t need it, but Leesa also offer a 100 night trial. You’d literally have to be nuts to return this bad boy, though.
They’re also a very ethical brand. For every ten mattresses sold, Leesa donate one to UK register charities that serve homeless and at-risk men, women and children. I’m becoming more and more conscious of the need to give back, so I’m thrilled to find a company where purchases matter. They also plant a tree for every mattress sold!
We spend one third of our lives asleep. Why not invest in that? You can get a very snazzy £100 off any Leesa Mattress using my code: WHILEIMYOUNG.
